In 2013 EANS announced procurement for WAM (Wide Area Multilateration) surveillance system. The winner was Thales.
WAM is going to be put into operation in spring 2017, when it will be functioning simultaneously with the Secondary Radars in use. As a result, the quality of the surveillance coverage, the immunity of the surveillance network and, therefore, flight safety will improve.
WAM includes 24 supporting stations, which are positioned on rented masts. The supporting stations have combined interrogators (1090 MHz) and receivers (1030 MHz) or receivers only.
